Morning mates,

I'm planing to buy a car to convert to an EV, At present I have a Disco Turbo Diesel which I will keep for getting out the bush on fossicking and fishing trips and pulling my caravan up north on fishing trips.
Anyway the EV would be used for shopping trips around Geelong, trips to the Doctors in Lara for the wife and the ocassional trip down to Torquay to the mates place but most of the time the EV would be doing shopping trips locally.
I have been doing a lot of reading on EVs and I see that many people from around the world use many different vehicles to convert to full electric power, so I thought I would have a go at doing an electric car for myself.
I've found a couple of cars I think would make good converters, one is a 1993 Subaru Liberty Wagon and the other is a 1976 VW MK1 GOLF 3 DOOR. Which vehicle, in your opinion, would make the best EV for my needs? Bearing in mind that times I would like to travel at the speed limit of 100KM PH but most times I would be traveling at 60KM PH and I would like a range of 100KM or better between charges. There is only the wife and I plus our two little dogs and our shopping so we don't need a whole heap of space.

So what cars do you think I should be looking at for converting to an EV for our needs?
Thanking you in advance for your advice,

Bill

Hi Bill,

100km is a fairly high range for a converted EV. Not impossible but you are going to need to have a fairly good battery pack. If your using Lead Acid's that is going to mean a heavy car so pick something that can take a high load. If you have the money then Lithium's of some sort will give you better range etc but this will cost quite a bit ($15K+)

100km/h shouldn't be a problem at all but for higher speeds an aerodynamic car is probably more important than a light one as once you start getting past 60 the air drag has more of an affect than the weight of the car.
