Our first conversion has been named the EVAust 1. It is based on a 3 door 1992 Daihatsu Charade. We chose this car because it is light, has quite a bit of room for a small car, is easy to work with and has been used successfully by other converters.

In the conversion we will be removing the back bench seat to make room for the battery box. We are considering putting in a single seat in the back to allow for two passengers when required although the average driving will be done with one or two people only.

Estimated performance specs after the conversion

Max Range 80 - 100km
Average day to day range 50km
Top Speed 130km/h
Average cursing speed 60 - 80km/h

Below is what we have achieved so far, it does not show the maximum that the car is capable of just what we have actually been comfortable with pushing it to during the test drives.

Longest trip 26km
Fastest speed 100km/h
Longest charge time 4 Hours

Houston we have a go! The EVAust1 went for its first test drive today and it performed better than hoped for. Now we have to dissemble everything, do some painting and a little more structural work and then get it all back together to go over the pits.

Things are moving again after a long delay. A new engine mount has been made up out of 10mil plate. We jacked up the car and connected up a single battery to watch the wheels spin, the car even moved backwards slowly when we dropped the jack down. A mounting bar for two batteries has been installed in the front and the back battery box should be installed next weekend..

The engine has been put in and fits perfectly. See the Album for some pictures. Next we have to do up some engine mounts to hold it all in place.

Problem solved. The Coupling has been fixed and we are ready to role.

Slight setback, the coupling between the motor and gearbox driveshaft came back last night and it doesn't fit, the hole for the motor shaft is to small... Going to be re measured with more accuracy tonight and have the hole enlarged.

Thanks to WesternMetalWorx the adapter plate has now been drilled and fits the electric motor and gearbox bell housing perfectly. We are now just waiting on the adapter to join the driveshaft of the motor to the gearbox. Over the next couple of days I will be writing a step by step guide on doing a template for the adapter plate.

The
adapter plate for the electric motor has arrived and now needs mounting holes drilled.

Visited the WAEVA club and had a look at a number of great conversions done by other people. Got a few good ideas and build up a lot more confidence that we are going down the right track.
